First-Year Writing Seminar ENGL 185
3 Credits per term

The Writing Seminars encourage pre-medical students to step outside the basic sciences and into the humanities, while perfecting their analytical, reading and writing skills. Small classes with a maximum of 17 students are focused on helping students write English expository prose, which is characterized by clarity and coherence. Both written and verbal expression are included in the syllabus. The course helps broaden the pre-medical educational experience and prepares students for medical school.

Writing Center

The Writing Center provides students with access to the mentoring, resources, and practice they need to build self-confidence and to become more effective writers. It offers individual conferences with the Writing Center Coordinator, programs, workshops, and peer group work.

The Center provides a walk-in and an appointment-based service and the faculty welcomes students at all stages of the writing process – students can feel free to bring ideas, outlines, drafts or revisions, or just drop by for a quiet place to think, read, or write. In addition, various handbooks, study materials, journals, novels, and volumes of poetry are available from the Center’s ever-expanding lending library for browsing and borrowing.
